Our help is needed

Since the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12th, la Société haïtienne d’obstétrique et de gynécologie (SHOG) has been hastily trying to reestablish communication with their members and staff, to provide support and assistance to them, as well as working to quickly reestablish and expand the services of the Croix-des-Bouquets Maternity Center in order to continue providing maternal and infant health services to women in Haiti. Because as Haiti rebuilds, childbirth cannot wait.

The SOGC has maintained a strong partnership with SHOG for over 10 years and has been a vital contributor to the FIGO Saving Mothers and Newborns project of implementing the Croix-des-Bouquets Maternity Center. We have demonstrated our determination and goodwill for the success of this project in the past, but now our help is needed in Haiti more than ever.

The campaign

The SOGC has launched the Mothers and Newborns of Haiti Donation Campaign, as part of its Earthquake Relief Initiative, in order to support SHOG’s efforts of expanding the Croix-des-Bouquets Maternity Center as quickly as possible. The SOGC has already committed $50,000 and is encouraging all members to generously donate one day’s salary toward this initiative. Already, we have seen SOGC members take the lead in organizing fundraising for the Mothers and Newborns of Haiti Campaign within the ob/gyn departments of their health institutions. Such efforts are encouraging and very much appreciated by the SOGC, la SHOG, and the women of Croix-des-Bouquets.

Financial support and shipment of supplies

Since February, the SOGC has provided much needed financial resources to SHOG to meet its payroll costs for its staff and the health professionals involved in the Croix-des-Bouquets Maternity Center. The SOGC has also sent a shipment of over 200 lbs of medication and supplies to Port au Prince for immediate use at the Croix-des-Bouquets Maternity Centre. This last initiative was supported by Collaboration Santé International, SOGC and the Montfort Hospital. The shipment was sent on a humanitarian flight supported by the Belinda Stronach Foundation. The collaboration, quick response and generosity of these donators and contributing organizations were instrumental in getting urgently needed resources to the centre at a time when they were needed most. The sent resources will fulfill the needs of the Maternity Centre for approximately 2 months.

How the funds will be used

Through your generous support and the SOGC’s dedicated partnership with SHOG, the Mothers and Newborns of Haiti Donation Campaign will provide funding for:

  • equipping two operation theaters,
  • establishing post operation recovery rooms,
  • acquiring necessary supplies and medications,
  • recruiting staff,
  • drilling a well for clean water,
  • establishing a management system for bio-medical wastes,
  • purchasing fuel for the generator and the ambulance,
  • as well as many other important steps that need to be taken in order to expand the centre’s ability of providing quality reproductive health services.

Donations

A total of $500 000 is needed to make this initiative truly successful and to fulfill our commitment of ensuring maternal and newborn health services to the women of Haiti.

SOGC has decided to concentrate its efforts on fundraising $500,000 to ensure the full operationalization of the Croix-des-Bouquets Maternity Center. This decision has been taken in light of our partners wishes for SOGC to support the return to work of Haitian health care professionals already in the region and the expansion of the maternity unit to provide comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care. Currently, it is felt that enough health professionals are available to meet the maternity unit’s needs. Should there be a need for additional health professionals in the future, we will let interested SOGC volunteers know.
