Call to Action for the United Nations MDG Summit

Did you know that you can play an important role in helping to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight ambitious goals to address some of the world's most pressing issues?

With over 350,000 women still dying in pregnancy and childbirth around the world, the goal with the least progress being made globally is MDG 5 on improving maternal health. It is imperative that we turn this trend around and start improving health outcomes for mothers and newborns around the world.

The voices of medical professionals in Canada carry a lot of weight. Use this privileged position and your unique expertise and experience in the field to support the sexual and reproductive rights and health of women worldwide.

On September 20-22, world leaders will meet at the United Nations Summit on the MDGs to discuss the state of the goals and how to strengthen coordinated and accelerated efforts for their achievement. The SOGC is supporting advocacy efforts calling on world leaders to increase support and commitment for achieving the MDGs during the September Summit.

The SOGC urges you to raise your voice and join these advocacy efforts. Some of the many ways that you can get involved include:

  • Writing a letter to your Member of Parliament encouraging increased support for maternal and child health at the UN Summit;
  • Writing letters to your local media to provide your opinion and expertise on what interventions are needed to address the needs of women and children in low-resource settings;

  • Joining the movement and staying connected by learning more about global campaigns at the UN's MDG website,;
